Key Category Analysis

*LULUCF category is excluded from the key category analysis, since it is a net carbon sink.
Others in the key category include Carbon Black Production (process), Rice Cultivation, Cement production (process), Agriculture Energy, Manure Management etc.

Emissions and Shares by Category 2023

Transport, Residential Energy, Industrial Energy, and Domestic Wastewater categories together account for 80.07% of Kerala’s total gross emissions.

Transportation category emitted 13.59 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO₂e), with road transport alone contributing ~87%, i.e., 11.83 MtCO₂e.

Residential Energy emissions totaled 3.20 MtCO₂e, with LPG usage contributing approximately 99.6%.

Industrial Energy emitted 1.89 MtCO₂e  of which emissions due to Furnace Oil/Low Sulphur Heavy Stock (LSHS) usage were 0.74 MtCO₂e (~39%), and that of natural gas usage were  0.62 MtCO₂e (~33%).

Key Category Analysis - Trends

Emissions from transport category  increased from 12.43 MtCO₂e in 2005 to 13.59 MtCO₂e in 2023.  The emissions in 2020 declined by 17% (10.33 MtCO2e) from 2019 level due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. By 2023, emissions increased by 32% from 2020 levels, and ~9%  from 2019 levels reaching 13.59 MtCO₂e.

The emissions from the Residential Energy category increased by ~84% from 1.74 MtCO₂e in 2005 to 3.20 MtCO₂e in 2023.

Industrial Energy emissions declined from 2.11 MtCO₂e in 2005 to 1.89 MtCO₂e in 2023 (~10% decline). The emission trend is influenced by the phasing out of Naphtha in 2014 and steady increase in High Speed Diesel (HSD) usage since then.
