The Agriculture sector was the third-largest emitter in Kerala, contributing 1.57 MtCO₂e in 2023, accounting for approximately 6% of the state’s Gross GHG emissions (excluding LULUCF). These emissions originate from Rice Cultivation, Biomass Burning in Cropland, Agricultural Soils, and Livestock categories.

GHG emissions from the agriculture sector have decreased from 2.02 MtCO₂e in 2005 to 1.57 MtCO₂e in 2023. The livestock sub sector (enteric fermentation and manure management) was the primary contributor to total agricultural emissions accounting for ~70% throughout the reference period. Agricultural soils and rice cultivation accounted for 18% and 12% of the total agricultural emissions.
