Waste

The Waste sector comprises three main sub sectors- Domestic Wastewater, Industrial Wastewater and Solid Waste Disposal. Inventory assessments rigorously adhered to IPCC methodology and guidelines (IPCC, 2006; IPCC, 2019), and are largely based on IPCC’s Tier 1 and Tier 2 methods of emissions estimation.

The emission factors assumed for various categories of emissions are by and large taken from Government of India’s inventory submissions to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). In the absence of country-specific data, default emission factors (Tier 1) were applied.

Activity data has been sourced broadly from Kerala State Pollution Control Board, published documents and reports of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), National Sample Survey Organization, Department of Economics and Statistics, Suchitwa Mission, Kerala Solid Waste Management Policy (2018), and National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) among others.
